Get involved · Programme Director

Build the first diplomate-led service in your specialty in India.

Set the standard, train the first cohorts, and put your specialty on the map, in a hospital built to the best international standard of care.

This is the first time a specialty service in India is led by a diplomate and tied to a residency that trains to board standard. As programme director, you decide what good care looks like in your specialty here, and you train the first people held to it.

Role

A board-certified diplomate (ACVxx / ECVxx, or RCVS Recognised Specialist) leading one service and its residency programme

Specialties

Emergency and Critical Care · Surgery (soft tissue, including surgical oncology, and orthopaedics) · Anaesthesia and Analgesia · Diagnostic Imaging · Internal Medicine · Neurology · Cardiology · Dermatology · Dentistry and Oral Surgery · Pathology

Works with

The founder and clinical lead, the other programme directors, the faculty, and the founding board for your specialty (a separate body)

The role

Where it makes a difference

At the hospital

Your protocols, equipment and consumables become how the service runs. Every case is managed to the standard you set.

In the training

Up to 3 residents at a time. You lead the practicals, supervise their cases and sign off skills, and they carry your standard into their careers.

Across India

Backup advice for the residents on call and case review for the specialty hospital and the emergency centres, so referring vets have a diplomate behind the case.

In the specialty

A service that produces its own outcomes, case series and publications from the first case, led and co-authored by you.

The work

What you’ll do

01

Your service

Set the standard of care and own its protocols, equipment and consumables, so the hospital is set up to do what’s taught.

02

Your specialty programme

Build your specialty’s training programme, from the skills list and syllabus to credentialing, mentorship and competency requirements, so it matches or exceeds the training standards of the American and European colleges in your specialty. You’ll shape the residency with the founding board. This is a full-time, in-person residency with supervised clinical training, held to the same bar as a college residency: not distance learning, an alternative route or CPD.

03

International standing

Lead the work towards recognition by, or affiliation with, the established colleges in your specialty, and build the international relationships that get it there.

04

Your training

Every training item has a didactic part, a practical part, and its protocol and equipment. You lead the practicals, sign off skills and run rounds with residents and interns.

05

Shared teaching

Faculty, including remote college faculty, build and deliver the didactic content, so your teaching time goes to practicals, rounds and sign-offs.

06

Your team

Find the founding board members and the faculty for your specialty, and interview the trainees who’ll join your service.

Timeline

Your journey

Months 0–6

Service, protocols and skills list set up; 24/7 care opens at month 6

Months 0–18

First cohort goes through the 18-month internship; from month 4 interns are on clinics and rotate through your service

Month 18

First residency cohort begins under your supervision

Then

Steady state at month 36: full service and residents, your standard established

Where it takes you: your name on the programme, and an open invitation to discuss co-founding, in the Mayo Clinic model where clinicians are founders.

Time

How you can work

You set your schedule between on site and remote, based on the support the service needs, and you build the team you need to get there.

On site, full time

Lead the service day to day at the specialty hospital.

Hybrid

On-site blocks in turns with the other specialists (at least one on site at any time), with remote teaching, case review and supervision in between.

Flexible

Block length and pattern agreed with you; specialists who share a service count as one on-site diplomate.

Questions

Common questions

What do the first 36 months look like?

The first 36 months are a build. The first team grows together: services open in stages, 24/7 care opens at month 6, and the first residency cohort begins at month 18. Until the hospital reaches its full team at month 36, it is smaller than it will be, some cover is shared with trainees under supervision, and roles change as the team grows. It is also the first opportunity of its kind in India to found a specialty service and set the path for the people who follow.

Is any of it distance learning?

No. Trainees are on a full-time, in-person programme with supervised clinical training on site. Online teaching is its didactic part. It is not distance learning, an alternative route or CPD.

Which residencies start first?

Emergency and critical care, surgery, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology and cardiology start together. Dermatology, dentistry and oral surgery, and pathology each have their own residency intake (3 residents when it begins), their own programme director and their own training structure, outside the core cohorts. They can begin any time after the first six months of the internship.

How many trainees does each programme director supervise?

Up to 3 residents. Programme directors in emergency and critical care, anaesthesia, surgery and imaging also train the Advanced Practitioners, up to 6 at a time. The cap is set for the founding team and rises as more programme directors join.

Are programme directors part of the board?

No. Programme directors run the service and its programme. Board members assemble the assessors and the training faculty as two separate teams, so the people who teach are not the people who certify.

Can programme directors be co-founders?

Open to discussion at any time, in the Mayo Clinic model, where clinicians are founders of the institution.

What are the terms?

Set out in your offer: pay, leave, travel and accommodation, relocation and visa support where they apply, and professional indemnity.
